Study Finds Vegetable Drawer in Fridge a Bacteria-Filled Hotbed
(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 15, 2013 ) Lublin, Poland -- Anyone getting ready to open their refrigerator to grab something healthy from the crisper should think long and hard about the last time they cleaned that area of their fridge. A new study from the NSF International revealed that the vegetable drawer in the refrigerator is likely the germiest place in the kitchen.
The drawer often holds both dirty and washed vegetables, and that means cross contamination that others areas in the fridge, and even kitchen, see much less often. According to Lisa Yaka, who is a microbiologist, as well as the manager of the Home products Certification Program for
NSF International, a nonprofit organization that develops public health standards, the problem is that a majority of individuals do not think of their vegetables as a place where one can contract germs.
A 2011 study had previously revealed that the kitchen was the dirtiest area in the home, and microbiologists noted that it was by far filled with the most germs, after reviewing 14 common kitchen items in 20 southeastern Michigan households.
The Center for Disease Control has estimated that over 48 million individuals become sick from foodborne illness every year. Meanwhile, over 3,000 actual die due to contamination that stems from food handling or kitchen germs.
Im a mom so this is something that I think about when Im at home in my kitchen. You know, how can I protect them? said Yakas.
Many parents assume that the microwave is the worst of all the places in the house, while others assume that it is the keyboard for the microwave. There is some logic to that guess, as Yakas points out, A lot of people said the keypad on the microwave, she said. Everybodys touching it all of the time, but they probably clean it more often, she said.
The blender has turned out to be another unclean area in the kitchen, as does the can opener. This is another area that people just arent thinking about it. People just toss it back into the drawer. Food particles can build up and get dried. After using it, clean it off, use a sponge or cloth, said Yakas.
