Local Inventor's 4-Hour Life Comes Full Circle With Invite To Princeton Panel
(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 29, 2013 ) Huntersville, North Carolina -- Slip-On Dancers founder and inventor Katie Hughes, three years removed from walking away from a promising career with McMcaster-Carr Supply Company, now finds herself slated to sit on an inventor's panel this Friday at her alma mater of Princeton University alongside the likes of Bump Technologies inventor David Lieb among others. Such recognition is meaningful to Hughes. But just as rewarding was last June, when the Charlotte native's Zumba-inspried business so freed her from traditional constraints of time and geography that she found herself running it via laptop while sipping caf con leche at Buenos Aires coffee house and without missing a beat. How was Hughes able to do this? She credits fellow alumnus Tim Ferriss and his bestselling book "The 4-Hour Work Week" for much of her success.
Following the guidelines laid out in Ferriss' book, Hughes:
Found a viable niche, Zumba Fitness instructors interested in helping their clients reduce knee injuries.
Delegated every day-to-day process of her business from manufacturing to taking and fulfilling orders and even to providing customer service.
Placed herself in roles of overseeing operations and business development (finding more niches of people to buy Slip-On Dancers).
The results of Hughes removing herself from operations have benefited her both personally and in business.
"I've gotten into business Blogging, taken a Spanish class, traveled to London and South America," she said. "In terms of business, I've been able to redouble my efforts to find new and promising marketing channels like Amazon where we've seen tremendous growth in the past 6 months."
Hughes has also used extra time gained from her 4-Hour lifestyle to give back, serving on an advisory panel for Queen City Forward's Social Innovation Fellowship that helps new socially conscious businesses to find their footing.
"All of this has been rewarding." said Hughes, "But the most important benefit for me is regaining time to do the things that are important to me from running my business from another country to tending my garden and speaking at my alma mater as part of prestigious panel."
