Studies Show Americans Are Likely Contributing To Global Deforestation
(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 20, 2015 ) Shoreline, WA -- Studies show that about half of all Americans are indirectly responsible for the destruction of rainforests throughout the world and particularly in Indonesia. This is due to the high volume consumption of palm oil. Many of the goods that Americans consume contain palm oil, a high demand vegetable oil that is responsible for mass deforestation resulting in the destruction of the natural habitat of animals like the orangutan and Sumatran tiger. This has contributed to the loss of about 90% of their populations within the past 20 years. According to the World Wildlife Fund, an area equivalent to 300 football fields of rainforest is cleared each hour for the sake of palm oil production.
Palm oil is a common ingredient in cosmetics, shampoo, cleaning agents, laundry detergents, toothpaste, etc. 85% of the world's palm oil is globally produced and exported from Indonesia and Malaysia. This unsustainable consumption is the leading cause of a third of all mammal species in Indonesia to be critically endangered.
This large-scale deforestation is pushing many species to the brink of extinction. Findings show that if nothing changes, species like the orangutan and Sumatran tiger could become extinct in the wild within the next 3-10 years.
Concerned Americans can help by replacing the things they already buy with products that contain only sustainable palm oil. Products such as soap, toothpaste, shampoo, lotion and many other everyday items are very common to have a vast amount of this unsustainable ingredient.
According to Andrew Benares, president of True Earth Essentials, Inc., a natural and certified organic personal care company, "The first step in saving our natural world is by supporting companies that are focused on utilizing only sustainable ingredients in their products. By voting with our wallets, we can show the world that Americans are concerned about the where the ingredients in our products came from and if the process to obtain these ingredient is causing more problems than solutions. Perhaps that will ignite the change we need."
Companies such as True Earth Essentials produce 100% natural certified organic personal care products that use sustainable palm oil, which does not contribute to the global destruction of forests.
