The Increasing Trend Of Home Gardening In North America
(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 31, 2015 ) Kansas, Oklahoma -- From 2008 to 2013, home gardens increased by 4 million to 37 million households. Community gardens tripled from 1 million to 3 million, a 200% increase. Mike Metallo, president and CEO of the National Gardening Association (NGA), said this is the highest level of overall food gardening participation in more than a decade.
According to a 2014 study by the NGA, 1 in 3 households are now growing food. The primary reason why Americans garden is to produce better tasting food. It is followed by "saving money on food bills" and "for better quality food."
Americans aged 18-34 are the fastest growing population of food gardeners. It has seen a 63% increase from 2008 to 2013. The population segment is estimated to be at 13 million, according to the NGA.
Families have decided to take control of their food supply. Food gardeners that have children has seen a 12% increase. Meanwhile, gardeners living in urban areas has also increased their population to 29%. They realized healthy, quality produce can be harvested from their own backyard.
Home gardening has, no doubt, silently grown over the past five years. The surge, however, is nothing but silent. Mike Metallo said " there is truly is a food revolution taking place in America."
"We are seeing more people, particularly young people, actively engaged in growing their own food. The growth in just five years is pretty spectacular," he added.
People are now more informed and health conscious, especially with the high prices of food and medical bills today. They would rather plant, grow and harvest their own food than risk buying in the market.
Heirloom gardening is one of the many popular ways of food gardening. The seeds comes from a long line of organically grown plants they are planted, grown, harvested and preserved for over decades without any synthetic or genetic alterations. Better tasting, healthier produce is assured whenever Heirloom seeds are used.
