How toHow to Stretch Before and After Squats - WOD Nation coach Barry @ CrossFit Chiang Mai Stretch Before and After Squats
According to WOD Nation's Coach Barry, hip stretches is the best way to start for people who want to improve on their squats. The main purpose of these stretches is to open the hips up to get in a better position for squats.
Firstly, open the hip to the side. Grab a good resistance band. For ladies, the Purple WOD Nation Resistance Exercise Band is preferably recommended. For the guys, they can use the green resistance band.
Hook the band up. It is important to have the band just below hip height. Since this training is meant to stretch the hip, work on the right leg first of all. Make sure that the band around just below the hip.
Put the right leg inside the band. It should rest quite high to the hip. The band should not be too low or at the mid-thigh, it should be up towards the thigh.
Walk the band out to get enough resistance so it's going to do the work it needs to do.
Once it is quite tight, bend the unbanded knee and then go to a standard hip opener position. While in this position, remember to stay straight on. Don't stop to twist and contour. It's recommended to maintain a nice and straight position while doing semi-circles or half-moon shapes. Ten on one way and ten on the other.
Put one hand on the knee and open up the leg a little bit further. At this time, the resistance band is doing the work by distracting the hip capsule. By the end of this, one has to open up to get a better position in a squat.
For individuals with tight hips, WOD Nation recommends doing this exercise before squats and after. They can add 10 more half-moons on both ways, and then switch to the other leg.
