Cat Experts Say Prevention Better Than Cure For Litter Box Problems
(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 22, 2015 ) Troy, Ohio -- One cat behavior expert has released a set of videos offering advice for new and long-term cat owners through The Two Meows YouTube channel, including how to avoid problems with the litter box. One of the top behavioral reasons that cats are abandoned is litter box avoidance but according to the experts, understanding your cat can help prevent this.
According to the advice, introducing a new cat litter box can be a high stress undertaking for a cat so doing so carefully and slowly is the best way to avoid them being frightened away from it. Customer feedback shows that Open style cat litter boxes tend to be the more easily accepted by the nervous cat, the one most likely to abandon their box and deposit waste elsewhere.
This is because the open style allows the cat to see there is nothing dangerous hidden inside the box or even behind it and satisfies their instinct to be wary of dark spaces. But open style litter trays have been shown to allow more litter to be spread than closed styles.
To try to combat these problems, manufacturers are creating a range of unobtrusive litter stopping features to their boxes to help with the problem. Two Meows, on their Stop Scatter litter box, have used three features to help stop the mess; shaped sides, a small rim around the top and a holed grid at the entrance.
The shaped sides of the boxes mean that the litter hits the walls and slides back down into the main area of the box while the rim around the top stop it from flying upwards and out. The grid at the entrance works to get the litter from the cat's paws and let it fall back into the box rather than depositing it around the house.
