More Clinical Trials Study The Ways To Increase Bioavailability Of Turmeric
(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 10, 2014 ) Portland, Oregon -- Curcumin is the active ingredient of an ancient spice known as turmeric. This natural ingredient is widely used as an herbal supplement mainly because of its therapeutic effects. However, turmeric has low bioavailability, meaning it is poorly absorbed by the body. This is something that many experts are studying to improve.
An increasing number of clinical trials are studying the possible ways to increase the bioavailability of turmeric. Some studies have suggested that turmeric should be taken at a higher dose to give the body a better chance to absorb the necessary nutrients. Others indicate that absorption levels can be significantly increased with the use of other natural ingredients.
"Experts have suggested various ways to make turmeric bioavailable in the body. Some claim that mixing it with fats or quercetin can be really helpful in increasing absorption. However, using black pepper is the most recommended method in increasing curcumin absorption in the body," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.
Although there are quite a number of therapeutic benefits associated with the spice, individuals who take turmeric cannot make the most out of all the health benefits it can offer because of its low bioavailability. A black pepper extract, such as BioPerine, has been demonstrated to increase absorption of nutrients by as much as 2000 percent.
"The low bioavailability of curcumin can be overcome by using BioPerine. Curcumin supplements that contain the black pepper extract are commonly known to be more effective than those that do not contain BioPerine," added O'Sullivan.
Supplements are a popular source of curcumin for most consumers, as studies have shown turmeric powder contains very small amounts of the active ingredient. While it is believed that supplements can provide a much more concentrated dose of curcumin, poor absorption still remains a problem.
Several supplement manufacturers have recognized the power of a black pepper extract and have started combining curcumin formulas with BioPerine. Those who regularly consume curcumin supplements claim they are able to notice a difference in brands that contain BioPerine as opposed to those that do not (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
