DHA Fish Oil Might Reduce Risk Of Brain Damage In Alcohol Abusers
(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 11, 2014 ) Trittau, Schleswig-Holstein -- The Omega 3 fatty acid DHA may lower the risk for brain damage caused by alcohol abuse, according to new research.
It could also protect against eventual dementia, says the study published in the journal PLOS ONE.
Laboratory researchers reached this conclusion after exposing cultures of adult rat brain cells to alcoholic concentrations about four times the legal driving limit, the kind of level seen in chronic alcoholics. Then, they compared these with cultures that they exposed to DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) in addition to the alcohol.
The result was that there was up to 90 percent less neuroinflammation and 90 percent less neuronal death in the brain cells "fed" the DHA.
The study was conducted at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine with collaborators at the University of Kentucky and the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).
Warning against alcohol abusers using the study results as an excuse to consume Fish oil and carry on drinking, researcher Michael A. Collins, PhD, said, "Fish oil has the potential of helping preserve brain integrity in chronic alcohol abusers." But the best way to protect the brain was to quit drinking completely or at least reduce intake to low to moderate amounts, he said.
One highly recommended supplement containing a significant amount of DHA is Dr. Tobias Optimum Omega 3 Fish Oil, which was rated among the highest quality omega-3 fish oil supplements in the U.S. in a study carried out by trusted independent laboratory, LabDoor.
Commenting on the Loyola research, Dr. Tobias Ihde, CEO and president of DTI UG, developers of the Optimum Omega 3 Fish Oil, said, "This is excellent work and yet another example of why DHA should be taken by people of all ages and suffering various health conditions."
The Dr. Tobias product achieved its high ratings in a study carried out by trusted independent laboratory, LabDoor. Optimum Omega 3, which is made from the best quality coldwater fish from the Nordic Sea, contains three to five times more DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) than most other brands in the market. It is purified through one of the most sophisticated molecular distillation processes available and is enteric coated.
Research published in the New England Journal of Medicine has shown that enteric-coated fish oil provides three times better absorption. In other words, recipients get three times more omega-3s than they would from the same dosage from a capsule that didn't have the coating. The enteric coating also disguises the fishy aftertaste and prevents burping.
Dr. Ihde developed his product after discovering that fish oil helped his back and joint pain. He felt that the dosage of existing products was too low and he had concerns about their quality.
In addition to brain health, numerous studies have shown that Omega-3 fish oil supplements provide protection against heart disease and are beneficial for the joints, eyes and immune system, skin and hair. Additionally, Omega 3s may lower the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
Dr. Ihde provides free health and activity videos "since diet and activity are two sides of the same coin."
