Amazon Raises Free Shipping Threshold By 40% - Finesseur Remains Optimistic About Holidays Sales
(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 28, 2013 ) Oakland, CA -- Amazon has changed the minimum order size for Free Super Saver Shipping from $25 to $35. The change took effect on Tuesday, October 22, 2013. It is the first raise in more than a decade, according to Amazon. Buyers may notice the change from the missing "FREE Shipping" tags on product pages of items listed under $35. According to Amazon, the terms and conditions of their Amazon Prime membership option remains unchanged, with unlimited free 2 day shipping and no minimum order size on the more than 15 million Video with the Finesseur brand logo. items sold or fulfilled by Amazon.
"The service is so popular that more than a year ago we began shipping more items with Prime than with free shipping," Amazon says.
This change was a surprise to retailers selling on Amazon. "We learned about the change from CNNMoney on Tuesday morning," says Allison Montgomery, spokesperson of Kitchenware brand Finesseur. "Our signature Food scale is not affected by the raise in the minimum free shipping threshold. However, we are surprised that Amazon did not inform retailers who use their Fulfillment By Amazon service about the change directly."
Shipping costs increase during the holiday season, and Amazon foresaw possible increases in shipping charges earlier this year.
"The change is not affecting us directly in the short run, since our current products do not fall between the $25 to $35 range. Plus, it is already the shopping season for the holidays - most customers are going to buy multiple products and spend more than $35 at a time. However, the effect of this change is unclear to us beyond the holidays," added Montgomery. "We need more data to determine the impact. We are confident that this change is going to affect our competition, as quite a few of our key competitors list their products within the $25-35 range."
"Free shipping with a low minimum threshold was part of the reason why Amazon became so attractive to online shoppers. Consumers are now very used to comparing prices and doing research about products on Amazon. For example, when people shop for digital food scales at physical stores, they often look up Kitchen scale reviews on Amazon from their smart phones for comparison," said Montgomery. "Amazon has already established themselves as the standard in US retail. That generates a lot of customer traffic to Amazon, and this consumer traffic has been a big advantage for listing our products on Amazon. It is unclear to us yet if this change will affect daily customer visits to our products from within Amazon."
The stock market reacted well to Amazon's new policy. Amazon's stock price increased by 1.87% on Tuesday.
